Common Questions

Nepal Income Tax — FAQ

Answers to the questions I hear most from clients estimating their salary tax in Nepal.

Tax is applied on annual taxable income using progressive slab rates set by IRD Nepal. This calculator converts monthly income to annual, subtracts your deductions (PF, CIT, etc.), and applies each slab rate to the correct income band. The result is your total annual tax liability.

For Single filing: 1% up to Rs. 5 lakh, 10% on the next Rs. 2 lakh, 20% on the next Rs. 3 lakh, and 30% on the remainder. Married filers get a wider first slab (Rs. 6 lakh at 1%). Always verify current-year rates with IRD Nepal.

Yes — the slab table is fully editable. Update the "Up to" amounts and rates to match the official IRD slabs for your fiscal year. Set "Up to" = 0 in the last row to apply that rate to all remaining income above the previous threshold.

Yes. Enter your annual Provident Fund (PF) and Citizen Investment Trust (CIT) contributions in the deductions section. These reduce your taxable income before slab rates are applied, lowering your final tax bill.

Social Security Tax (SST) is a separate 1% levy on employment income for employees covered under the Social Security Fund (SSF). It is not the same as income tax. This calculator computes income tax only — SST, if applicable, is deducted separately by your employer before your take-home pay.

No — results are estimates only for planning purposes. Surcharges (e.g. 40% surcharge on tax above a certain threshold), rebates, and special provisions are not all accounted for. Confirm current-year slabs and any applicable surcharges with IRD Nepal or a qualified tax professional before filing.
